Ülemiste City installs battery storage to ensure security of supply

Estonian energy company Diotech has installed a battery storage system in Estonia’s largest business district, Ülemiste City, as a pilot project, with the task of making the use of electricity in the business district’s internal network more efficient and participating in the power exchange.

“Ülemiste City is a smart business district and smart electricity management ensures the security of supply of the district, helps keep costs under control and contributes to achieving climate goals,” said Sten Pärnits, Chairman of the Board of Mainor Ülemiste. “Electricity storage technologies offer significant advantages in the commercial real estate sector, both in terms of economic and environmental protection, and also contribute to the creation of smart buildings to ensure maximum energy efficiency,” added Pärnits.

Battery storage systems balance and make the use of electricity in the internal network more efficient, and also provide an opportunity to participate in the power exchange and have a positive impact on security of supply. In addition, the battery storage system will also participate in the frequency reserve market.

“We installed a battery storage system with a 1 MW power and a capacity of 2 MWh in the Ülemiste City business park, the main goal of which is to determine the potential of the battery storage system and help the business park reach a conclusion on how and under what conditions it would be reasonable to expand the battery storage system in the future for energy efficiency,” said Raivo Videvik, CEO of Diotech.

Diotech acted as a system integrator under the contract and handed over a turnkey solution to the client. Diotech will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the battery storage system.

“Although this is initially a rather small project for us, it gave us very good experience in how to integrate a battery storage system into the established energy system of a functioning business park. Considering that electricity is a very important input cost for most companies, it is worth following the example of Ülemiste City when optimizing its use,” said Videvik.

Ülemiste City is an international and diverse business environment, the focus of which is the development of a knowledge-based work, development and living environment. Today, the business park has developed into the largest and fastest growing smart business center in the Baltics, driven consciously and data-based by four main directions – knowledge, services, environment and community. Valuing innovation and open to new technological solutions, Ülemiste City is a flexible test environment and incubator where companies can test, develop and implement their ideas and solutions.

Diotech is an Estonian company established in 2014, which has grown to a group of companies with an annual turnover of approximately 25 million euros, where in addition to the parent company Diotech OÜ, the subsidiaries Diotech Electric OÜ, Diotech Nord OÜ and Solar Wheel OÜ (Sunecor) operate in various business verticals, as well as subsidiaries in Latvia and Lithuania. Diotech specialists have built over 1,000 solar power plants and converted over 100 solar power plants into power controlled by battery storage.
